iPhone 17 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro: What Should I Buy?

Apple wrapped up its annual September special event earlier today, unveiling the brand-new iPhone 17 lineup. The headliner, the iPhone 17 Pro, introduces a striking new design and a handful of meaningful upgrades over last year’s iPhone 16 Pro. But is that enough to warrant an upgrade, or should you stick with the 16 Pro? Let’s break down the key differences in design, performance, cameras, and more.
Colours
iPhone 17 Pro:
- Silver
- Cosmic Orange
- Deep Blue
iPhone 16 Pro:
- Desert Titanium
- Natural Titanium
- White Titanium
- Black Titanium
Design & Build Quality
This year marks a big shift: the iPhone 17 Pro ditches titanium for a new heat‑forged aluminum unibody design. Apple says this is its strongest and lightest Pro chassis yet, offering improved durability while still maintaining a premium feel. The back is Ceramic Shield, and the front panel gets an upgrade to Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is tougher than before.
Also new is a redesigned internal structure with a vapour chamber system, improving thermal management for gaming and demanding tasks. That’s a notable upgrade from the iPhone 16 Pro, which had a titanium frame but less advanced cooling. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro’s full-width camera plateau makes room for the largest battery ever in an iPhone.
Both models include:
- Ceramic Shield front (iPhone 17 Pro uses Ceramic Shield 2)
- IP68 water and dust resistance (up to 6m for 30 minutes)
- Action Button (introduced last year) and Camera Control button
Processor
iPhone 17 Pro:
- A19 Pro chip
- 6‑core CPU (2 performance, 4 efficiency)
- 6‑core GPU with hardware ray tracing
- 16‑core Neural Engine
iPhone 16 Pro:
- A18 Pro chip
- 6‑core CPU, 6‑core GPU
- 16‑core Neural Engine
Expect better efficiency and performance in graphics-intensive apps on the 17 Pro, thanks to hardware-accelerated ray tracing and the vapour chamber cooling.
Camera
iPhone 17 Pro:
- New 48MP Pro Fusion system
- 48MP Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto lenses
- New 4x Telephoto (100mm) sensor with 3D sensor‑shift OIS
- 16x optical-quality zoom range (up to 40x digital zoom)
- New 18MP front “Center Stage” camera with ultra-stabilized video
- ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2 support
- 4K Dolby Vision up to 120fps (on Main lens)
- Spatial photos and videos
- Studio-quality four-mic array, allowing for wind noise reduction
iPhone 16 Pro:
- 48MP Fusion (with anti-reflective coating) camera, 48MP Ultra Wide lens, and 12MP Telephoto sensor
- 48MP macro photography
- Dolby Vision video recording up to 4K/120fps
- Studio-quality mic array with wind reduction
- Spatial photos and videos
- Studio-quality four-mic array, allowing for wind noise reduction
The iPhone 17 Pro’s new zoom capabilities and upgraded front camera make it a big leap forward for photography enthusiasts, especially those who shoot ProRes or use advanced workflows.
Display
iPhone 17 Pro:
- 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED
- 2622‑by‑1206 resolution at 460 ppi
- 3,000 nits outdoor peak brightness
- Anti-reflective coating
iPhone 16 Pro:
- 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED
- 2622‑by‑1206 resolution at 460 ppi
- 2,000 nits outdoor peak brightness
Both models support:
- ProMotion (up to 120Hz)
- Always-On display
- Dynamic Island
The bump in peak brightness and anti-reflective coating on the iPhone 17 Pro should make outdoor viewing a lot more comfortable.
Other Features
iPhone 17 Pro:
- Wi‑Fi 7
- Bluetooth 6
- Faster charging: 50% in 20 minutes with 40W USB-C adapter (or 30 min with MagSafe)
- eSIM-only in Canada
- MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W
iPhone 16 Pro:
- Wi‑Fi 7
- Bluetooth 5
- 30W wired fast charging (50% in 30 minutes)
- MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W
Both devices support Apple Intelligence, Emergency SOS via Satellite, Crash Detection, Messages via Satellite, USB-C with USB 3 speeds, and Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
Physical Dimensions
iPhone 17 Pro:
- Height: 150.0 mm
- Width: 71.9 mm
- Depth: 8.75 mm
- Weight: 206 grams
iPhone 16 Pro:
- Height: 149.6 mm
- Width: 71.5 mm
- Depth: 8.25 mm
- Weight: 199 grams
The iPhone 17 Pro is slightly heavier and thicker than the 16 Pro, largely due to the new vapour chamber cooling system.
Battery
iPhone 17 Pro: Up to 33 hours video playback, larger battery with faster charging support
iPhone 16 Pro: Up to 27 hours video playback
Price
iPhone 17 Pro: Starts at $1,599 CAD (256GB). Apple has increased the base storage to 256GB this year, so prices are unchanged compared to the 256GB tier of last year’s Pro model. The $1,449 price point has been taken over by the new iPhone Air this year.
iPhone 16 Pro: Launched at $1,449 CAD (128GB). Now discontinued by Apple, but you can still find it from third-party resellers at a discount.
Final Thoughts
The iPhone 17 Pro brings some of the most meaningful upgrades to the Pro line in recent years: a tougher aluminum unibody, better heat management with vapour chamber cooling, a brighter and more readable display, and major camera system improvements. Add in faster charging and a bigger battery, and it’s a very complete package.
That said, the iPhone 16 Pro is still an excellent device and will continue to support all of Apple Intelligence’s new AI features. If you already own a 16 Pro, the jump to a 17 Pro will feel incremental unless you really care about photography, gaming, or longer battery life.
If you’re coming from an older Pro iPhone (or a non-Pro model and you’re just looking for a bit more oomph), however, the iPhone 17 Pro is absolutely the model to get. Pre-orders begin this Friday, September 12, with availability starting September 19, 2025.
If the iPhone 17 Pro is a little too rich for your blood, the base iPhone 17 starts at $1,129 and, for the first time, comes with a 120Hz ProMotion display.

Wow really weak update from Apple.
Slightly better cameras, similar batteries. Nothing really new.
