Chrome for iPhone Gets Gemini AI Upgrade

Google is bringing more of its AI push to the iPhone. As spotted by 9to5Google, Chrome for iOS is now rolling out built-in Gemini integration, giving users quick access to Google’s AI assistant directly from the browser. The feature first appeared in September on Chrome for Windows and Mac as part of what Google called the biggest upgrade in the browser’s history, and it’s now expanding to mobile — starting in the U.S.

Once available, the Google Lens icon to the left of the address bar is replaced with a page icon marked by the Gemini spark. Opening the new Page Tools menu reveals two options: Search screen (the existing Lens feature) and Ask Gemini.

Tapping Ask Gemini opens a floating overlay that sits above the webpage you’re viewing, complete with a brief four-colour glow and the URL attached. Users can choose to stop sharing the page at any time. Gemini can summarize the page you’re on, generate FAQs, explain complex topics in simpler language, quiz you on what you’re learning, adapt recipes to dietary needs, or compare information and make recommendations based on preferences. It’s the same design Google rolled out on Android, just adapted for iOS.

Google says Gemini in Chrome isn’t available to everyone yet and is rolling out gradually. For now, it’s limited to U.S. users with English set as their default language. You’ll need to be signed in, and it won’t work in Incognito mode. Canadians will have to wait a bit longer, but given Google’s recent AI rollout pace, expansion shouldn’t be far off.

This update arrives as Google amps up Gemini across its ecosystem. Last month, Google Maps gained Gemini-powered voice interactions that let the app talk back to users. Google also launched its newest AI model, Gemini 3, in Canada last week after debuting it in the U.S. earlier.

Google also emphasizes that Gemini in Chrome includes privacy controls. Users can manage how much browsing data Gemini can access, as well as how that information is used.

The feature appears to be rolling out more widely with Chrome 143 for iOS, which also adds biometric checkout support, new Chrome tips on the New Tab Page, and general stability improvements.
