X iOS App Gets Widgets for Home, Lock Screen
Social media network X has just rolled out a major update for iPhone and iPad users with the official launch of home and lock screen widgets on iOS. The update brings X in line with other popular apps that have offered widget support on Apple devices for years.
For many iOS users, widgets have become an essential way to glance at important information and take action without launching a full application. Apple first introduced widgets on the iPhone home screen with iOS 14 but it took years before X officially supported them.
The new widgets work on both the home screen and the lock screen meaning users can check the latest news and alerts with a swipe or even while their device is locked.
The new home screen widget option called X News Highlights displays trending headlines from the platform. Users can tap any of these headlines to open that topic right inside the X app making it easier to stay current with breaking stories or popular discussions shared by others. This aligns with X’s position as a real time source for news and conversations which many people rely on every day for updates.
On the lock screen, users will find multiple widget options designed to surface more personalized and interactive content. These include notification count widgets that show how many new alerts are waiting attention, and message widgets that display unread chat conversations.
An early teaser for Twitter widgets appeared at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference many years ago but never materialized. After changes in ownership and ongoing evolution under Elon Musk the company behind X prioritized bringing this functionality to market.

Great update, but when are they going to add the option to sync your timeline between iPhone and iPad? This was such a great feature in the third-party apps that the original Twitter never had and still doesn’t. I hope they decide to add this feature one day. It’s annoying going through your Twitter timeline on one device and not being able to continue where you left off on the other
