Apple TV Android App Now Supports Google Cast

Android users can now stream shows and movies from the Apple TV app to compatible televisions and devices, thanks to a major update that introduces Google Cast support, as spotted by CNET.

The Apple TV app first became available on Android phones and tablets in February this year, allowing users to subscribe to Apple TV+ and access popular shows and films directly from the Google Play Store. However, it lacked a key feature familiar to Android ecosystems, casting to TVs over Wi Fi using the Google Cast protocol.

With the release of version 2.2 of the Apple TV app on Android, the Cast button now appears in the top right corner of the interface and inside the full screen video player. When tapped, it lets users choose from a list of nearby Chromecast or Google TV devices and start streaming directly to a larger display.

Playback controls like play, pause, rewind and volume remain accessible on the phone while casting, offering a seamless experience similar to other popular streaming services.

The Google Cast feature not only boosts convenience for viewers but also brings the Android app closer in functionality to its counterpart on Apple devices, where users rely on AirPlay to stream to Apple TV hardware. While AirPlay remains exclusive to Apple platforms, adding Cast support ensures that Android users are no longer at a disadvantage when trying to watch Apple Originals or live sports on a television.

For Android users who enjoy shows like Ted Lasso, Severance and Slow Horses or who follow live sports through MLS Season Pass and other offerings in the Apple TV ecosystem, this update makes it easier to settle in for an evening of viewing without being tethered to a small screen.

Netflix recently removed casting support from its mobile apps to most smart TVs, leaving some users frustrated and directing them to use native TV apps or remotes instead. In contrast, Apple’s move to embrace Google Cast highlights a strategy to make its content more accessible across platforms.
