iPhone 18 Pro Likely to Bring Under Screen Face ID
According to new reports from industry insiders, Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models will refine both the design and the core hardware in ways that may appeal to photographers, power users, and mainstream buyers alike.
Sources familiar with Apple’s plans say the 2026 iPhone Pro models will adopt Face ID sensors placed beneath the display, which would remove the need for the current pill shaped cutout at the top of the screen (via MacRumors).
This shift could produce a more seamless front panel while still supporting secure facial recognition. In place of the existing notch design, Apple will likely position the front camera in a small opening at the top left of the screen. Beyond display refinements, the camera systems on the iPhone 18 Pro phones are rumored to receive one of the biggest upgrades in years.
Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a variable aperture lens on the main 48 megapixel camera, giving users new creative control over how much light enters the lens. That shift would mark a departure from the fixed aperture approach seen in previous iPhone generations and offer photographers more flexibility in different lighting conditions, whether shooting in bright daylight or low light.
Camera performance could also see benefits from an upgraded image sensor developed by Samsung. This three layer stacked sensor architecture is expected to improve responsiveness while reducing noise and increasing dynamic range in photos. Apple traditionally sources sensors from Sony, so a transition to Samsung for certain components would be significant.
The iPhone 18 Pro models are widely believed to run on a new A20 Pro chip made with advanced 2 nanometer class manufacturing. This chip could bring improvements in performance and power efficiency while enabling advanced features powered by Apple Intelligence.
Design details beyond the display changes suggest Apple will stick with the sleek, flat edge aesthetic that has defined recent iPhone models. Rumors indicate that the rear camera array and general dimensions will closely resemble the current Pro designs, with screen sizes of approximately 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches for the Pro and Pro Max respectively.
Previous reports also indicate Apple’s strategy with the iPhone 18 Pro series could reflect a broader shift in how the company staggers product launches, focusing first on high end flagship devices before unveiling more affordable models later.
