Amazon Could Invest $10B in OpenAI at $500B Valuation

Amazon is reportedly in talks to make a massive investment in OpenAI, a move that could further reshape the balance of power in the rapidly accelerating AI race. According to a new report from Reuters, Amazon may invest around $10 billion USD into the ChatGPT maker, potentially valuing OpenAI at more than $500 billion if a deal is finalized.

The discussions are said to be “very fluid,” underscoring that nothing has been signed yet. Still, the scale of the talks highlights just how hungry the AI sector remains for capital, computing power, and strategic partnerships as companies race to build increasingly capable systems that rival — or surpass — human-level intelligence.

This potential investment would build on an already deepening relationship between the two companies. In November, OpenAI signed a massive $38 billion USD agreement to buy cloud services from Amazon, signalling a growing reliance on Amazon Web Services for the immense computing resources required to train and run large language models. That deal alone suggested Amazon was positioning itself as a key infrastructure partner for OpenAI, even as Microsoft remains its largest backer.

If the investment goes through, OpenAI is expected to use Amazon’s Trainium AI chips, which are designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s dominant accelerators and Google’s in-house silicon. The move would further diversify OpenAI’s hardware stack and reduce its dependence on any single provider — a theme that’s become more pronounced following reports of internal tension over the future of OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft.

The talks also come as OpenAI continues laying the groundwork for a future IPO, which could value the company as high as $1 trillion. That potential public listing reflects just how central ChatGPT has become to the broader tech landscape. Earlier this month, ChatGPT topped App Store downloads in the U.S. for 2025, driven in part by a steady cadence of high-profile updates.

Just last week, OpenAI rolled out GPT-5.2, its most powerful and capable model yet for both ChatGPT users and developers, reinforcing its lead at a time when competition from Google, Anthropic, and others is intensifying.

At the same time, Amazon’s interest underlines OpenAI’s ability to partner widely following its corporate restructuring. After moving away from its original non-profit-only roots and finalizing a new public benefit structure tied to Microsoft’s investment, OpenAI now has greater flexibility to raise capital and secure computing resources at an unprecedented scale.

If Amazon does move forward with a $10 billion investment, it would mark one of the largest AI funding discussions to date — and another clear signal that the AI spending boom is far from cooling off.
