Telus customers can now access CBC Gem Premium through the company’s Stream+ bundles for free.
If you are a Telus or Koodo customer with a Stream+ bundle, you automatically have access to CBC Gem Premium at no extra cost. For those not on a bundle, the service can be purchased as a standalone add-on through Telus for $5.99 per month plus tax.
CBC Gem is the public broadcaster’s digital video streaming service. While the basic version is free and ad-supported, the Premium tier allows for ad-free video-on-demand, early access to exclusive programming, and a live stream of the CBC News Network.
To begin, Stream+ subscribers must log in to their Telus account to add the service to their plan. Once added, Telus will send an activation email. You must click the “Activate now” link in that email and follow the provided steps to link your accounts.
For customers who already have an active Gem Premium subscription, the transition depends on how you currently pay. If you pay the CBC directly by credit card, your old subscription will be cancelled automatically once you activate through Telus to avoid double-billing.
However, if you pay through the Gem app via Apple, Google, or Roku Pay, you will need to wait until your current subscription ends before you can add it to your Telus account.
Back in October, the CBC went to federal court to fight an order that would force it to reveal its streaming numbers for its Gem streaming service.
