Apple Confirms Google Gemini Will Power the Next AI Siri

Apple and Google have confirmed a multi-year partnership that will see Apple base its next generation of Apple Foundation Models on Google’s Gemini AI technology. That’s right, Apple is relying more on Google instead of using its own AI models.

The companies announced the deal in a joint statement, saying the Gemini models and Google’s cloud technology will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized version of Siri expected later this year.

“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology,” the companies said in the statement on Monday.

Apple said it chose Google after reviewing multiple options. “After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” the statement said.

The iPhone maker also emphasized that privacy will remain central to how its AI works. According to the companies, Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system, while “maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”

CNBC first reported the news, which was announced to Jim Cramer. The partnership follows earlier reporting by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in August, which said Apple was in early talks with Google about using a custom Gemini model to power a new version of Siri.

Apple Intelligence has been nothing short of a disappointment for iPhone customers so far. The delayed smarter AI Siri is not here yet, but is expected to debut this spring.
