Telus Tries to Lure Public Mobile Users With a $25 5G Plan
Some Public Mobile customers are getting texts offering a switch over to parent company Telus, but the deal itself isn’t anything special.
Users on RFD say the message offers a $25 per month Telus plan with 5GB of 5G data, including the autopay discount (requires debit pre-auth) and no contract. The problem is that Public Mobile already sells a $25 plan with 5GB of 4G data, and some customers are paying even less. One user said they’re currently on a $23 plan with more data and were still offered the switch.
Where the offer might make sense is for people who specifically want to move to Telus. Switching would unlock features Public Mobile doesn’t offer, like Wi-Fi calling (which looks like it’s never coming to Public), which can be useful if you struggle with indoor coverage or travel a lot. Otherwise, you’re paying more for the same or less data.
This isn’t the first time Public Mobile customers have seen these kinds of texts. A similar promotion showed up in December, when some users were offered 40GB of 5G data for $34 per month if they switched to Telus.
As usual with these messages, the offer appears to be targeted and time-limited, and it’s not likely available to everyone. Let us know if you received any switcher text messages from Telus in the comments below.

Doesn't Telus have a history of price increases? As far as I recall Public Mobile is maybe the only national brand these days that honours your plan price in perpetuity. I left Fido because they raised my plan price halfway through my 24 month Black Friday promo. Currently paying $30 for 30GB of CAN/USA/MEX data. Is there a better deal out there? Prior to that I had the same thing but with 75gb and $35 a month, but I rarely go over 12gb or so.
Yeah, the lack of wifi calling sucks, but to get around that I use the free call forwarding to a Fongo number if I know I'm going to be in an area without coverage. The only other big drawback then is 2FA texts if you're not in CAN/USA/MEX, but I find that if you cover all your bases before you go somewhere (have accounts set to use authenticators, voice call 2FA with the aforementioned call forwarding option, etc) it's not a big deal.
