Meta is Shutting Down Horizon Workrooms

Meta is officially pulling the plug on its virtual office experiment. The company has announced that Meta Horizon Workrooms, the standalone VR app designed to revolutionize remote meetings, will be discontinued on February 16, 2026.

When Workrooms first launched in 2021, it was pitched as the future of the workplace. By wearing a Quest headset, colleagues could sit around a virtual table as avatars, share whiteboards, and even see their physical computer screens in a digital environment. However, as Meta shifts its focus toward a broader social ecosystem and AI-powered wearables, the standalone business app is being retired.

If you are a regular user of Workrooms, you need to act quickly. Once the shutdown takes effect on February 16, Meta will delete all data associated with the app. This includes your virtual room settings, notes, and meeting history.

To save your information, you have two main routes:

  • For Profile and Room Info: Log into workrooms.workplace.com to download details related to your account and specific rooms.
  • For Meeting History: Visit accountscenter.meta.com to retrieve and download other data, such as meeting logs.

For those using Quest headsets managed by an organization, your ability to download data may depend on your administrator’s permissions. It is a good idea to check with your IT department before the deadline.

Meta explained the move by stating that Horizon has evolved into a social platform that can support various productivity tools rather than needing a separate, dedicated app. This pivot follows significant restructuring at Reality Labs, which recently saw a 10% reduction in staff.

If you still want to work in VR, you aren’t out of luck. Meta suggests several alternatives to fill the gap:

  1. Meta Quest Remote Desktop: If you specifically used Workrooms to view your PC or Mac inside your headset, this app remains the go-to official tool.
  2. Collaboration Apps: For team meetings, apps like Microsoft Teams Immersive, Zoom Workplace, and Arthur are already integrated into the Horizon ecosystem.
  3. Third-Party Favorites: Many users have long preferred apps like Immersed or Virtual Desktop for multi-monitor setups and better resolution.
