Apple’s Secret ‘Campos’ Project: When the Old Siri Will Finally Disappear
It seems like Apple just can’t make up its mind when it comes to AI chatbots. Apple is now preparing to turn Siri into a full generative AI chatbot later this year, a move that signals a massive shift in how the company approaches artificial intelligence.
The project, known internally as Campos, represents Apple’s aggressive push to catch up with the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new interface will be deeply integrated into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users will still activate the service using the traditional Siri voice command or by holding the side button, but the technology underneath will be entirely different.
The upcoming chatbot is expected to rely on Google’s Gemini technology. It will likely run on Google’s own Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and cloud infrastructure. This setup provides significantly more power than the smaller AI models Apple plans to launch on its own servers this spring.
Apple was previously hesitant to enter the chatbot market. However, the massive success of ChatGPT, which now has more than 800 million users, forced a change in strategy, says Gurman.
“Apple plans to revamp Siri later this year by turning the digital assistant into the company’s first artificial intelligence chatbot, thrusting the iPhone maker into a generative AI race dominated by OpenAI and Google,” according to the Bloomberg report.
The rollout will happen in stages. A first version of the updated Siri is expected with iOS 26.4 (this spring), but the more advanced Campos chatbot is slated for iOS 27 (fall of 2026). These are separate updates, with the latter version offering a much more capable assistant that can handle complex conversations and tasks.
“The chatbot — code-named Campos — will be embedded deeply into the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems and replace the current Siri interface, according to people familiar with the plan,” the report noted.
Wow, it took Apple this long to realize it needed an AI chatbot? And this time it will be powered by Gemini. At least we know it will be way better than the class clown known as Siri, which has remained stagnant since its inception nearly 16 years ago.
