iPhone 18 Pro Leak Reveals Smaller Dynamic Island

Apple is planning a major change for the face of the iPhone 18 Pro. According to a series of new supply chain leaks, the Dynamic Island cutout is expected to shrink by roughly 35% compared to the current iPhone 17 Pro (via MacRumors).

The latest details come from the well-known leaker Ice Universe, who shared specific dimensions for the new cutout. The report claims the width of the Dynamic Island will drop from its current 20.7mm down to approximately 13.5mm.

While the software island will still expand and contract to show notifications and Live Activities, the physical “dead space” on the screen will be much smaller.

This design shift is made possible by Apple’s progress with under-display technology. For years, analysts have predicted that Apple would eventually hide the entire Face ID sensor array behind the screen. It appears the iPhone 18 Pro will be the first step in that direction.

The rumor mill indicates that Apple has successfully moved the Face ID “flood illuminator,” a sensor used to light up your face in the dark, underneath the display panel. By moving this specific component, Apple can reduce the number of visible sensors in the pill-shaped cutout.

Recent confusion suggested that Apple might move the camera to the top-left corner or switch to a “hole-punch” design. However, respected analysts like Ross Young and Jeff Pu have clarified that the centered pill shape is staying, just in a more compact form. Jeff Pu noted that Apple now expects to use this smaller layout to help differentiate the Pro models from the standard iPhone 18.

35% reduction in the dynamic island is a major upgrade? LoL. I am so used to the dynamic island that I don't really notice it, even while watching videos.

Just get rid of it already, good grief. You can literally have a tiny sliver on the top of the phone for your Face ID, Sensors, Camera, etc, and it will cost less than having a hole and oval shape punched into the near top of the screen.
