Gemini for Google Maps Now Supports Walking, Biking on iPhone
Google has officially expanded its Gemini AI integration within Google Maps, bringing a conversational, hands-free experience to those who travel on two wheels or on foot.
While Gemini was first introduced to the driving mode back in late 2025, this latest expansion is a significant win for Canadian commuters and outdoor enthusiasts who rely on biking and walking to get around our cities.
One of the most impressive parts of this update is how Gemini acts as a personal guide. When you are navigating a walking route, you can simply tap the Gemini icon or say “Hey Google” to ask about your surroundings.
For example, if you find yourself exploring a new area in Toronto or Vancouver, you can ask, “Tell me more about this neighborhood,” or “What are some must-see attractions nearby?” Gemini will use real-world data to give you historical context or local recommendations without you ever leaving the navigation screen.
It also solves a very practical problem: finding a pit stop. You can now ask, “Are there any cafes with a bathroom along my route?” Gemini will identify the best spots and even handle follow-up questions, like whether a place has vegan options or what the seating situation is like.
For cyclists, the update is primarily about safety and keeping your hands on the handlebars. Instead of squinting at a map mount to see your arrival time, you can just ask, “What’s my ETA?” or “What’s my next turn?”
In addition to the conversational features, Google is making directions more “human.” Instead of hearing “turn right in 200 meters,” which can be hard to judge while moving quickly, Gemini will now use visible landmarks. You might hear instructions like “turn right after the Starbucks” or “head toward the red brick building.”
This update is rolling out globally now. For iOS users in Canada, the feature should be live in the Google Maps app today, provided they have Gemini enabled. Android users can expect a gradual rollout over the coming weeks.
