Adobe Reverses Decision to Discontinue Animate After Community Backlash

Adobe has quickly reversed its decision to discontinue its Animate platform. The decision comes after the company saw backlash en masse over the decision.

In less than 24 hours after announcing that Animate would be sunset as of March 1st, 2026, Adobe Creative Cloud Senior Director for Design Marketing & Community Mike Chambers published an update on Reddit.  The day prior, Adobe shared an email with customers regarding the news.

“What we shared did not meet our standards and caused a lot of confusion and angst within the community,” Chambers says.”On behalf of Adobe, I want to apologize.”

Chambers continues to clarify that its Animate platform will continue to be available to new and existing customers for the foreseeable future. Although Adobe will no longer be discontinuing the service, Chambers states that it “is in maintenance mode.” This means that Adobe will no longer add new features to Animate. However, the software will routinely see updates to improve security and fix bugs as they are discovered.

“If we deprioritize active development of an application, our approach is to move that application into maintenance mode with continued support. Under maintenance mode, the application will continue to be available, will continue to receive security and bug fixes, but will not get new features.”

For users who leverage Adobe Animate for their workflow, the company’s decision to reverse course will likely come as good news. Animate supports the ability to design animation and vector graphics for TV, websites, apps and more. Once Adobe began reaching out to customers, many were quick to respond with frustration over the decision

“For Adobe Animate, our commitment is to work with the community to ensure users continue to have long-term access to their content, regardless of the state of development of the application,” Chambers says.

Although Animate is here to stay, some users are still frustrated with the messaging. Considering that the software will no longer receive new features, Adobe is committed to maintaining a subscription model around it. Many believe the company should offer a perpetual license for access now that additional features will not be added over time.
