OpenAI Begins Testing Ads in ChatGPT: When to Expect Them in Canada

Come on, we knew this was coming at some point right? OpenAI has announced it is officially beginning to test advertisements within ChatGPT.
The pilot program is starting with a small group of users in the United States, and while the ads are not yet appearing in Canada, they are expected to roll out to other regions, including the Canadian market, in the future.
The test is currently limited to adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers. Those paying for Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise plans will continue to have an ad-free experience. OpenAI says the move is designed to help fund the massive infrastructure costs required to keep the service free for millions of people.
How Ads Will Appear in Chats
OpenAI is emphasizing that ads will not interfere with the quality of AI responses. “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers,” the company stated on Monday, noting that all sponsored content will be clearly labelled and visually separated from the actual conversation.
The system works by matching ads to the topic of your current conversation or past interactions. For example, if you are asking for dinner ideas, you might see a sponsored listing for a grocery delivery service or a meal kit.
Privacy and Control
A major concern for users is whether their private data will be handed over to brands. OpenAI says advertisers will never have access to your actual chats, memories, or personal details. Instead, they only receive “aggregate” data, such as how many people clicked on a link.
Users on the free tier who want to avoid ads entirely have two options. They can move to a paid Plus or Pro plan, or users can choose to opt out of ads in their settings, though OpenAI says this will result in “fewer daily free messages” (you’ll see ads still, though).
The company also confirmed that ads will not appear for users under 18 or alongside sensitive topics like mental health and politics. While the U.S. test is just beginning, OpenAI plans to listen to user feedback before expanding the program to more countries.
Anthropic, the makers of the AI chatbot Claude, ran a series of ads during the Super Bowl that seemingly mocked OpenAI’s plan to bring ads to ChatGPT. The Claude ads stated, “ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.” With ads coming to the free version of ChatGPT, it could be giving ideas to Google to bring ads to the free version of Gemini. Are we going full circle again?
