Snapchat Creators Can Now Earn Money from Followers

Snapchat has today announced that it is launching Creator Subscriptions, introducing a new way for creators to make money directly from their followers. This new feature allows popular users, known as Snap Stars, to offer exclusive content to fans who are willing to pay a monthly fee.

The program is starting in an alpha testing phase on February 23. While it will begin with a small group of creators in the United States, Snap confirmed that the feature will expand to Canada, the United Kingdom, and France in the coming weeks.

Fans who decide to subscribe will get a few special perks. The main attraction is access to exclusive Snaps and Stories that are not available to the general public. These might include behind the scenes footage or more personal updates from their favorite stars.

Subscribers will also get a special badge on their profile. This badge shows the creator that they are a paying supporter. When a subscriber sends a message or a reply to a public Story, their message will be prioritized. Snap says these replies can even be pinned at the top of the creator’s list. Finally, the subscription includes an ad free experience when viewing that specific creator’s content.

Creators have the freedom to choose their own monthly prices. Snap is providing “recommended tiers” for these costs, which generally range from $4.99 to $19.99 per month. According to early reports, creators will keep approximately 60% of the revenue after standard platform fees from Apple or Google are taken out.

Snap wants this to be a “sustainable source of revenue” for people who spend their time making content for the app. The company stated that “Snapchat has always been about connection, and creators are driving that more than ever.”

By adding this premium layer, the app is moving toward a model where fans can support the people they follow most closely.
