iOS 26.4 CarPlay Update: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude Support Now Confirmed

Apple is set to open up its CarPlay ecosystem to third-party AI chatbots for the first time, as rumoured.

According to MacRumors, the upcoming iOS 26.4 update will allow AI services like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude to integrate directly with the in-car system, providing drivers with hands-free access to advanced conversational tools. This confirms earlier reporting by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, yet again.

Traditionally, Apple has strictly limited CarPlay app categories to minimize driver distraction. However, the new update introduces a dedicated category for voice-based conversational apps. While these apps will now be able to run on the dashboard, they will be restricted to voice interactions to ensure road safety.

The integration introduces a new, customizable voice control screen designed specifically for CarPlay. While users can ask these AI chatbots complex questions hands-free, there are a few important limitations to keep in mind. You cannot summon a third-party AI by voice alone, meaning you must manually tap the app on the CarPlay screen to begin the interaction.

Also, these AI apps will not have the authority to control vehicle functions like climate control or internal iPhone settings. Companies like OpenAI and Google will also need to specifically update their apps with the new CarPlay entitlement before they appear on your dashboard.

In supported Tesla vehicles, xAI’s Grok is available as an AI voice chatbot that can answer any question, while also plan your navigation and suggest routes and implement it right into the car’s nav.

This move marks a significant shift in Apple’s strategy as it moves further into the generative AI space. By allowing answer engines like Gemini and Claude into the vehicle, Apple is giving drivers a way to get more detailed information than Siri typically provides.

iOS 26.4 is currently in developer beta and is expected to see a public release this spring.

According to Apple’s CarPlay developer guidelines, these apps are allowed (note the addition of voice-based conversational apps):

  • Audio apps
  • Communication apps (SiriKit Messaging or VoIP Calling)
  • Driving task apps
  • EV charging apps
  • Fueling apps
  • Navigation apps (route guidance with turn-by-turn directions)
  • Parking apps
  • Public safety apps
  • Quick food ordering apps
  • Voice-based conversational apps

Are you looking forward to chatting with AI apps during your next drive with CarPlay?
