Nintendo Switch 2 System Update 22.0.0 Adds ‘Handheld Mode Boost’ for Original Switch Games

Nintendo has released the system firmware Version 22.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The brand new software adds ‘Handheld Mode Boost’, which allows original Nintendo Switch games to run as if it were in TV mode while played in handheld mode.

As per the system update notes provided by Nintendo, Version 22.0.0 introduces Handheld Mode Boost to the Nintendo Switch Software Handling settings within the Nintendo Switch 2. “Handheld Mode Boost will cause compatible Switch software to run as if in TV Mode,” the company says. “Certain functionality may be affected.”

Nintendo clarifies and states, “When enabled, Handheld Mode Boost causes the performance of Nintendo Switch software while undocked to run as if it were being played in TV mode.” The Nintendo Switch 2 provides resolutions of up to 1080p when playing in handheld mode. The original Switch, on the other hand, only supported up to 720p in this mode. So, many original Nintendo Switch games will garner some improvements.

To activate Handheld Mode Boost on your Nintendo Switch 2:

  1. Select ‘System Settings’ on the Home Menu.
  2. Navigate to the System Settings menu and select ‘System’.
  3. Scroll and select ‘Nintendo Switch Software Handling’.
  4. Select ‘Handheld Mode Boost’ to toggle this setting on or off.

It’s worth noting that when enabling this setting, the system will provide improved visuals but may increase the power consumption of the Nintendo Switch 2. The end result of Handheld Mode Boost will ultimately vary between games. Some Nintendo Switch games will be unaffected. Handheld Mode Boost may also prevent software from using the system’s touch screen.

On top of introducing Handheld Mode Boost, Nintendo’s Version 22.0.0 software also adds the ability to save notes about friends on your Friend List. Players now also have the ability to invite friends to GameChat rooms you’re participating in. Full patch notes can be found on Nintendo’s support website.
