OpenAI has announced its intent to acquire Astral, a move designed to transform its AI-powered coding platform, Codex, from a simple suggestion engine into a comprehensive software engineering agent.
Astral is well-known in the developer community for its high-performance Python tools, including uv, Ruff, and ty, which are used by millions of engineers to streamline their daily workflows.
This acquisition is a strategic response to intensifying competition in the AI-assisted development market. While OpenAI’s Codex has seen explosive growth, tripling its user base to over 2 million weekly active users since the start of the year, rivals like Anthropic’s Claude and the AI-native editor Cursor have gained significant traction among professional developers.
By integrating Astral’s engineering expertise, OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s role across the entire software development lifecycle. “Our goal with Codex is to move beyond AI that simply generates code and toward systems that can participate in the entire development workflow, helping plan changes, modify codebases, run tools, verify results, and maintain software over time,” OpenAI stated in the announcement.
