OpenAI to Launch New Desktop ‘Superapp’

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is planning to merge its most popular tools i.e. ChatGPT, the Codex coding platform, and the Atlas web browser, into a single desktop “superapp.”

Over the last year, OpenAI released several standalone products, but this led to what executives are calling “product fragmentation.” By bringing everything under one roof, the company hopes to create a more seamless experience for its 900 million users.

In an internal note to employees, OpenAI’s Chief of Applications, Fidji Simo, explained that spreading efforts across too many different apps and technology stacks has been a distraction. Simo noted that this fragmentation has slowed the company down and made it difficult to maintain the high-quality bar they want for their products.

The goal is to move away from “side quests” and refocus on a unified platform. OpenAI President Greg Brockman will temporarily lead the effort to overhaul the product lineup and manage the organizational changes required to make the superapp a reality.

The new superapp is not just about cleaning up the desktop; it is about adding power. OpenAI is leaning heavily into “agentic” AI. This means the software will be able to perform complex, multi-step tasks autonomously. For example, a user could start a research project in the Atlas browser and have a Codex agent automatically handle the coding or data analysis within the same interface.

For now, the focus is strictly on the desktop experience. The ChatGPT mobile app is expected to remain a standalone product and will not be part of this initial consolidation.

The tools being merged have arrived at different times over the past few months. Atlas, the AI-native browser, launched in late 2025, while the standalone Codex desktop app followed in early 2026. Bringing them together should eliminate the need for users to constantly switch between different windows and apps to get their work done.
