iPhone 18 Pro’s Purported Smaller Dynamic Island Leaked

According to recent supply chain reports and industry insiders, the iPhone 18 Pro is set to feature a significantly smaller Dynamic Island, marking the first major change to the display cutout since it replaced the notch (via MacRumors).

The primary reason for this design shift is said to be a breakthrough in sensor placement. For the first time, Apple is expected to move the infrared dot projector, a critical component of the Face ID biometric system, underneath the active pixels of the display.

This allows the remaining hardware, including the front-facing camera and the flood illuminator, to occupy a much smaller footprint. While many users have hoped for a completely invisible camera system, the technology for high-quality under-display photography is not yet at the level Apple requires for its flagship devices. By hiding the Face ID sensors while keeping the camera visible, the company maintains its high standards for selfie quality.

The reduction in the Dynamic Island’s size will provide a more immersive experience for watching videos, playing games, and scrolling through social media. Despite the physical hardware shrinking, the software functionality is expected to remain a core part of the iOS experience.

This refined look is a stepping stone toward the ultimate goal of a completely uninterrupted glass slab. Current roadmaps suggest that while the iPhone 18 Pro will have a smaller cutout, the standard iPhone 19 or 20 models might be the first to move the entire camera system under the screen.

Beyond the display, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to debut the A20 chip, which is expected to be built on a cutting-edge 2nm process. This jump in architecture generally leads to better thermal management and longer battery life, even during intensive tasks like 4K video editing or mobile gaming.
