Disney Executives Reportedly Discussed Acquiring Epic Games

Disney senior executives are reportedly holding discussions revolving around the possible acquisition of Fortnite creator Epic Games.

Appearing on the latest episode of The Town with Matt Belloni on YouTube (via Insider Gaming), tech journalist and former Verge deputy editor Alex Heath claims that he has heard that Disney wanted to acquire Epic Games in some fashion. Heath states that he knew of some senior executives of Disney who wanted to consider an acquisition.

“I know for a fact there are senior executives in Disney who want them to buy Epic and are just waiting for that moment,” Heath said during the podcast. “And then there are others who think it’s a bad idea.”

Belloni went on to state that the new Disney CEO, Josh D’Amaro, wasn’t too hot on Disney’s $1 billion deal with OpenAI, which fell through upon the closure of Sore. He then states that Disney “was 500% behind this Epic Games relationship that Disney has where they are developing an open world experience within Fortnite”.

In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion USD (around $2.08 billion CAD) for an equity stake in Epic Games. This was the start of a long-standing relationship between the two companies, as Fortnite then became the home for many seasonal collaborations, using Disney IP, including Marvel and Star Wars. The idea even included creating a “games and entertainment universe” connected to Fortnite.

Heath went on during the podcast to state that if Epic Games would ever be acquired, Disney would be “the most natural home for it for a lot of reasons, for the park integration – can you imagine a Fortnite park – to all the open-world, you know, integrating Disney IP into it, which they’ve already announced, and also Disney’s gaming platform, and I can see that”.

Recently, Epic Games announced mass layoff, affecting more than 1,000 employees. The company cited “downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025″ as the leading contributor to the layoffs. “We’re spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded,” the company said in a memo sent to employees.
