Microsoft is Killing Popular Copilot Features as it Prepares a Massive ‘Super App’

Microsoft has begun the process of unifying its consumer and enterprise Copilot applications into a single platform. The consolidation lays the structural groundwork for an upcoming AI “Super App” teased by CEO Satya Nadella (via GeekWire).

According to support documents released by Microsoft, the migration starts in mid-August with mobile devices and web browsers before expanding to Windows and Mac apps by mid-September. Commercial users will notice rebranded software, while consumer users face the removal of several standalone features.

As part of the shift, Microsoft is retiring consumer capabilities that failed to gain significant market traction. Starting August 18, Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat, and the current iteration of Deep Research will be permanently discontinued. Additionally, animated avatar Mico is being sunsetted from the main app, though Microsoft plans to retain the character within select educational tools.

This consolidation is a prerequisite for a broader “Super App” scheduled to launch before the end of September. Led by Jacob Andreou, the former Snap executive appointed to run Microsoft’s consumer AI products, the upcoming platform aims to integrate conversational AI, automated coding tools, and new autonomous agent capabilities into one central hub.

While Microsoft 365 Copilot recently reached 30 million paid commercial seats, adoption represents a modest fraction of Microsoft’s overall enterprise user base. Meanwhile, third-party analytics estimate the consumer Copilot app attracts around 38.5 million monthly active users, lagging significantly behind ChatGPT’s estimated 1 billion monthly visitors.

By shedding underperforming consumer experiments and unifying its desktop and mobile apps, Microsoft is attempting to eliminate friction for users who rely on AIfor both professional tasks and everyday personal use.
