Google Launches Veo 3.1 Lite at Half the Cost

Google has officially launched Veo 3.1 Lite, a new addition to its generative video family designed for developers and businesses that need to scale production. The Lite version maintains the exact same processing speed as the Veo 3.1 Fast model but does so at less than 50% of the cost.

Announced by the Google DeepMind team, Veo 3.1 Lite is positioned as the most cost-efficient model in the current lineup. It effectively completes the Veo 3.1 family, offering a middle ground for those who need professional-grade output without the premium price tag of the flagship models.

Starting April 7, Google will also be adjusting the pricing for the Veo 3.1 Fast model, ensuring that the entire ecosystem remains competitive. For now, Veo 3.1 Lite is available through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, giving developers immediate access to the new capabilities.

While it is a “Lite” model, it does not skimp on essential features. It supports both text-to-video and image-to-video workflows, allowing users to start with a written prompt or a reference image. The model supports flexible aspect ratios, including the standard 16:9 landscape for cinematic content and the 9:16 portrait format popular on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

In terms of resolution, users can choose between 720p and 1080p. While the flagship Veo 3.1 model supports 4K, the Lite version focuses on these standard high-definition formats to keep rendering times low. Users can also customize the duration of their clips, with options for 4, 6, or 8 seconds.

One of the standout features of the Veo 3.1 generation is its ability to generate native audio. Unlike older AI video tools that produced silent films, Veo 3.1 Lite can generate synchronized soundtracks, including ambient noise and sound effects that match the visual action. If a user generates a video of a busy city street, the model can automatically layer in the hum of traffic and the chatter of pedestrians.

The launch of Veo 3.1 Lite comes at a competitive time in the industry. As competitors shift their focus or exit the space, Google is doubling down on providing a stable, programmable interface for creators.
