Apple to Release iPhone Air 2 Despite Low Sales Rumours
According to a report from MacRumors citing a known leaker on Weibo, Apple is doubling down on its ultra-thin smartphone strategy, with new rumours suggesting that a second-generation iPhone Air is already in the works.
Despite reports of lukewarm interest in the first-generation model, Apple appears committed to the slim form factor for the long haul. The first iPhone Air, which launched in late 2025, was marketed as the thinnest iPhone ever made. While early sales data suggested that many consumers still preferred the more robust iPhone 17 Pro models, Apple’s leadership reportedly views the Air series as a multi-generational project.
The leaker, known as Fixed Focus Digital, claims that Apple will “grit its teeth” and push through with at least two generations of the device. This strategy reflects Apple’s historical approach to new product categories, often sticking with a design through its growing pains until it finds its footing or becomes a staple of the lineup.
While the first model faced criticism for its single-lens rear camera, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to address some of these hardware limitations. Rumours suggest that Apple is working to fit a second rear camera into the incredibly thin chassis, potentially a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens. To make this happen, engineers are reportedly developing a thinner Face ID module and using a more compact OLED panel.
Under the hood, the iPhone Air 2 will likely feature the A20 Pro chip, built on a cutting-edge 2nm process. This jump in efficiency is crucial for a device with such a slim frame, as it helps manage heat and extends battery life without requiring a physically larger power cell. Additionally, the device may include Apple’s proprietary C2 modem.
While the heavy hitters like the iPhone 18 Pro and the long-awaited Foldable iPhone are expected in the fall of 2026, the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 are likely to move to a different launch window.

“Rumours suggest that Apple is working to fit a second rear camera into the incredibly thin chassis” Well, they didn’t fit the first camera into the “incredibly thin chassis” either – it’s in a camera bump.
The iPhone Air is my biggest buyers remorse! Looking forward to September when I can trade it in.
