In a move designed to reduce distractions, Spotify has just introduced a new feature that allows all users, regardless of their account type, to completely switch off video playback across the app.
According to Dustee Jenkins, Spotify’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, the company recognizes that navigating the digital world can often feel daunting for families. This latest update expands on previous controls that were limited to specific account types.
While parents on the Family plan could already disable video for users under the age of 13, that control now applies to any account on a Family plan. Even more notably, the setting is rolling out to everyone on Free, Premium, and Basic accounts.
The update is a direct response to user feedback. Data from the company shows that 60% of managed account users under 13 already had video turned off by their guardians, proving a strong appetite for a more focused listening environment. Furthermore, Spotify reports that more than 93% of its users are eager for features that provide greater control over their personal listening experience.
To access these new options, mobile users should look under the “Content and display” section of their app settings. On the desktop app, the toggle is located within the “Display” settings. For those managing a Family Plan, these video controls will now appear on the account page right next to the existing Explicit Content Filter.
This update is part of a larger effort by Spotify to refine its safety and privacy tools. The company has also been implementing age assurance systems to ensure that age-restricted content, such as certain music videos or social features, only reaches appropriate audiences.
