GTA 6 Developer Confirms Hack Amid Ransom Threat
Following a public threat from hacking collective ‘ShinyHunters,’ who claims to have breached Rockstar Games’ systems via a third-party analytics provider, the GTA 6 developer has confirmed it is dealing with a new security incident (via Kotaku).
The breach was first brought to light when ShinyHunters posted a message on the dark web directed at the studio. The group also issued a stern ultimatum: pay a ransom by April 14, 2026, or face a massive public leak of confidential data.
In their message, the group warned Rockstar to “make the right decision” to avoid becoming the next major headline, threatening not only to leak stolen files but also to cause “annoying digital problems” for the company.
In a statement provided to the media, a spokesperson for Rockstar Games sought to downplay the severity of the situation. The company confirmed that a “limited amount of non-material company information” was accessed during the incident. Crucially, Rockstar emphasized that the breach has had no impact on its internal organization or its player base.
Despite Rockstar’s reassurance, the timing of the attack is particularly sensitive. The studio is currently in the final stages of developing Grand Theft Auto VI, which is slated for a November 2026 release. This isn’t the first time the company has been targeted. A massive leak in 2022 saw 90 videos of early GTA 6 gameplay posted online, an event that cost the studio millions of dollars and thousands of hours in recovery time.
ShinyHunters is a well-known name in the world of cybercrime, previously linked to high-profile breaches at companies like Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster. They are known for targeting identity systems and API keys rather than using traditional technical exploits.
