Ecobee Launches 24/7 Professional Monitoring in Canada with New Plans
Ecobee is overhauling its Smart Security subscriptions, and for the first time, Canadian customers will have access to professional monitoring.
The Toronto-based company was founded in 2007 and pioneered the smart thermostat category before expanding into cameras, sensors, and home security. In 2021, it was acquired by Wisconsin-based Generac Holdings for up to $770 million, though it continues to operate as a standalone subsidiary out of Toronto.
Now the company is ditching bundled plans in favour of a modular approach built around three tiers. Core is free with any security device and covers the basics: motion and person detection, and door and window alerts. It does not support professional monitoring add-ons.
The Plus plan runs $7 CAD per month or $70 CAD per year and adds people and package detection for one camera, 30 days of event history, smoke alarm listening, enhanced energy savings, and compatibility with professional monitoring add-ons. Advanced, the top tier at $14 CAD per month or $140 CAD per year, expands those same features to unlimited cameras. The old Complete plan used to be $125/year.
Professional monitoring itself is a separate add-on under both paid plans, letting customers choose between smoke alarm detection ($7/month or $70/year) or full break-in protection ($14/month or $140/year). In Canada, emergency response is powered by RapidSOS. Ecobee told us professional monitoring is not available in Calgary.
Now, for new customers wanting unlimited cameras and pro monitoring, it will cost at at least $28 per month, consisting of the old $14/month plan plus $14/month Total Protection plan.
Existing subscribers don’t need to do anything. Ecobee says it is honouring current pricing and features through the end of 2026, and users will receive emails outlining their plan details and any loyalty savings. As for what happens in 2027, existing customers may see price hikes? Ecobee told iPhone in Canada on Friday that if customers choose not to add new professional monitoring in Canada, their pricing will stay the same, even in 2027. Any pricing and loyalty changes are related to U.S. customers only.
On the technical side, the Activity Feed now holds up to six months of history with new filtering tools (instead of the old 30 days), and the Know Who’s Home feature has been improved to more accurately track arrivals and departures.
It’s the company’s first pricing update since 2020, and the new plans are now available through Amazon in both Canada and the U.S.
