YouTube Mobile App Now Lets You Share Timestamped Videos

YouTube‘s mobile app is getting a long-awaited additional feature. Now you can finally share videos with friends or online, starting at a specific timestamp.
The company details the change in an updated support page. “We’re bringing Share at Timestamp to the YouTube mobile app, expanding the availability of our existing desktop feature,” the company says.
Starting now, users on iOS and Android can link to a video, jumping viewers to a very specific portion of the media. Users can watch or scrub through a video on their phone to a very specific moment. When sharing the video, you can select a timestamped link to bring others to that moment within the video. It’s a very helpful feature when wanted to share a specific portion of a YouTube video.
YouTube notes that because the Share at Timestamp feature is now available on iOS, Android and web browsers, it’s sunsetting its Clips feature. Clips was designed as a workaround for timestamped videos. It allowed users to create a shareable clip from a video and send it to someone, rather than forwarding a timestamp.
With this in mind, however, any Clips you’ve already created will still be viewable. Though the ability to set an end time or include custom descriptions when sharing is no longer supported. Clips was first introduced in 2021.
“We recognize that community clipping is an important way for creators to reach new audiences, and a number of third-party tools with advanced clipping features and authorized creator programs are now available to do this across different video platforms,” YouTube says.
The company notes that more clipping tools for creators are being explored this year. This includes ‘Video Clips’ in Studio. This feature allows creators to republish clips from longer videos and archived streams. Later this year, auto-suggestions, which provide data on the most “clippable” moments, will roll out for creators.
