YouTube TV Gets Custom Multiview Builder

YouTube TV has just rolled out a new tool called the ‘Multiview Builder,’ that allows subscribers to mix and match up to four live channels of their choice for a fully customizable Multiview experience.

The feature lets subscribers move beyond Top Picks and Recommended pairings, giving them the freedom to select up to four live streams simultaneously. Whether you want to monitor three different news broadcasts while keeping an eye on a game, or watch four separate sporting events at once, the control is now in your hands.

Accessing the new customisation options is relatively simple. While watching any live channel, you can press “down” on your remote to bring up the on-screen menu. From there, a new option to Build a Multiview or Choose up to 4 live programs will appear.

The interface organizes available content into six main categories to help you navigate the lineup:

  • Recommended: Shows channels based on your personal viewing habits.
  • Sports: Houses all active athletic events.
  • News: Consolidates local and national news feeds.
  • Movies & Shows: Two separate categories for episodic TV and films.
  • Other: A catch-all category for various lifestyle, reality, and specialty programming.

Once you have selected your desired channels, the system takes roughly 5 to 15 seconds to build the stream. This slight delay is because YouTube TV processes these combinations on their own servers rather than relying on your local hardware.

While this is a massive leap forward for the service, there are a few caveats to keep in mind. First, this feature is currently restricted to live content. You cannot yet add DVR recordings or Video-on-Demand (VOD) titles to a Multiview window. Additionally, family-friendly content is currently excluded from the custom builder.
