Meta Launches ‘Instants’ for Unfiltered Photo Sharing
Instagram has officially launched a new Snapchat-inspired feature called “Instants,” which introduces a new way for users to share spontaneous photos that disappear after they are viewed.
The update, which is rolling out globally, is aimed at bringing a more casual and unfiltered experience to Instagram. Meta describes Instants as a tool designed to help friends “share in the moment.” The feature focuses on raw, everyday photography rather than polished or edited content.
Unlike standard Instagram Stories or Feed posts, Instants do not allow for the use of filters, stickers, or traditional editing tools. Users also cannot upload images from their camera roll, meaning the photo must be taken live within the app to ensure authenticity.
Within the main Instagram app, Instants are located in the Direct Messenger (DM) inbox. Users can find a new photo stack icon in the bottom right corner of their inbox to begin. After snapping a photo, you can add a simple caption before sending it to a select group, such as Close Friends or mutual followers (people you follow back).
Once a recipient opens an Instant, the photo disappears. However, the sender retains a private archive of their own Instants for up to one year. This archive allows users to look back at their spontaneous moments or even compile them into a “recap” video to share as a standard Instagram Story later on.
Alongside the integration within Instagram, Meta is also experimenting with a standalone Instants app for both iOS and Android. Currently being tested in select markets, including Spain and Italy, the dedicated app is designed for speed. It opens directly to the camera, allowing for even faster sharing without distractions.
