You Can Now Buy Individual Apps on Setapp Without a Membership

Setapp is making some big changes today, as the Mac app subscription service is introducing two new features: an AI Gateway for developers, and the ability to sell apps individually outside its monthly membership for the first time.

The AI Gateway is the more technical of the two. Right now, developers who want to build AI features into their apps have to juggle multiple integrations for different AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Setapp’s new gateway puts all of that under one roof, with a single API and billing through MacPaw Wallet.

The bigger news for most people is the standalone app sales. Until now, Setapp worked one way: pay a monthly fee, get access to everything. Going forward, developers can sell their apps on Setapp as a one-time or standalone purchase, outside the membership entirely. Setapp says this is aimed at developers whose apps don’t fit neatly into a subscription bundle.

In a statement to iPhone in Canada, Setapp said: “Setapp Membership provides exposure to a broad, existing user base, and developers benefit from Setapp’s catalog-driven discovery. Single-app distribution is ideal for apps with pricing models or niches that may not align with the Setapp Membership scheme.”

For users, the membership isn’t going anywhere. If you already pay for Setapp, nothing changes. You’ll just start seeing some apps on the platform that are standalone purchases rather than included in your plan. Setapp says it will add a filter on the main page so you can easily tell which apps are in your membership and which ones cost extra, while new apps will be added on a rolling basis.
