Facebook Launches ‘Forum’ App to Fight Reddit, But It’s Missing in Canada
Meta just launched Forum, a standalone iOS app that takes Facebook Groups and rebuilds them into something that looks a lot like a Reddit competitor. The app isn’t in Canada yet, but if you have a US Apple ID, you can grab it right now (just use this same workaround back in the day to get Fortnite from the US App Store).
The idea behind Forum is pretty simple: strip away the noise of the Facebook feed and make group conversations the whole point. Sign in with your existing Facebook account and everything carries over automatically, your groups, your profile, your activity. Anything you post on Forum still shows up on Facebook, so nothing gets siloed.
The main feed is built entirely around group discussions rather than trending posts or algorithmic content, which means you’re seeing what actual people in your communities are talking about. There’s also a feature called Ask that pulls answers from across multiple groups at once, handy when you want a quick recommendation or opinion without having to post in five different places. For people who want to share more openly, there’s an option to post under a nickname instead of your real name.
Group admins get a new toy too, which an AI assistant designed to help with moderation and community management, though Meta is quick to note that human admins stay in charge.
Forum covers everything from niche hobby groups to local communities to support groups. Availability of some features will vary by country, so Canadians should expect a slightly different experience once it does roll out here.
