Spotify Debuts Narrated Magazine Articles

Spotify is expanding its platform beyond music, podcasts, and traditional audiobooks. The streaming giant has officially launched a trial that brings text-based magazine features directly into the app as spoken-word audio tracks.

The initiative launches with a curated collection of more than 650 long-form articles. Spotify’s in-house audiobooks team produced these recordings, focusing heavily on popular culture, entertainment, technology, and style.

To build the initial library, the company secured licensing agreements with a variety of prominent media publications. Listeners can now stream audio versions of written pieces from major brands, including WIRED, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork.

The company is positioning the new format as a lighter alternative for people who enjoy narrative storytelling but might not have the time to commit to a full-length book. Every narrated article in the trial collection runs under two hours long.

“With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the music, podcasts, and audiobooks people already come to Spotify for, focused on topics we know they love,” said Colleen Prendergast, Licensing Lead at Spotify Audiobooks.

The company has structured the rollout around its existing subscription models. Premium subscribers can stream these articles as part of their regular monthly audiobook listening allowance without paying extra fees. For users on the free, ad-supported tier of the service, individual narrated articles are available to buy as standalone digital purchases for US $1.99 each.

Spotify says its overall audiobook listening hours have jumped by 60% year over year, helped along by specialized features like automated text-to-audio syncing tools and digital bookmarking.
