This Free App Unlocks Whoop 5.0 Data Without Subscription
Steam dev @b_nnett has shaken up the wearable tech world by releasing an iOS app that allows Whoop 5.0 users to access their health data without paying for a subscription.
The tool, which is currently in a pre-alpha stage on GitHub, directly challenges the business model of one of the most prominent fitness trackers on the market.
Whoop has long been a polarizing figure in the tech community. While praised for its sleek, screenless design and deep physiological insights, the company’s subscription-only model has drawn significant criticism.
For many users, this feels like their own biological data is being held for ransom. If you don’t pay the $199 to $359 yearly fee, you cannot see your heart rate, sleep stages, or recovery scores, even though the sensors on your wrist are still functioning perfectly.
Bennett, who is also a developer for Steam, decided to tackle this issue head-on. He released a free iOS app designed to bypass the Whoop paywall by connecting directly to the hardware via Bluetooth. The app works by pulling raw data directly from the Whoop 5.0 sensors. Because the app uses a core written in the Rust programming language, it can process all this information locally on the user’s phone.
At its current stage, the app can track:
- Heart rate and Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
- Blood oxygen levels (SpO2)
- Skin temperature
- Motion and activity levels
- Sleep stages
The project was shared on GitHub on June 2 and saw an immediate explosion of interest. In just a few days, the repository gained over 1,300 stars. The developer community has already begun contributing fixes and improvements to the code.
