Apple Intelligence Can Now Create Realistic AI Photos

Apple has announced a major overhaul of Image Playground, introducing more advanced AI image generation and editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence, as announced at its WWDC keynote today.

The company says the new version is built on upgraded image-generation models that can create higher-quality images in a much wider range of styles, including photorealistic artwork.

According to Apple, the new image models run through Private Cloud Compute, allowing users to generate images while keeping their personal data private.

Image Playground can now create everything from realistic landscapes to stylized artwork featuring people from a user’s photo library.

Users can also transform existing photos into different artistic styles by simply describing what they want using natural language.

Apple says photos used for image generation are not stored or shared, including with Apple itself.

The company also introduced new editing capabilities that allow users to refine AI-generated images more easily.

For example, users can select specific objects within an image by circling them and then move, resize or modify them using touch controls or text-based instructions.

Apple demonstrated adding birthday candles to a cake by selecting the object and describing the desired change.

The updated Image Playground also supports multiple output formats, making it easier to create images for different purposes.

Users can generate:

  • Landscape images for websites.
  • Portrait images for flyers and posters.
  • Message conversation backgrounds.
  • Contact posters.
  • Lock screen wallpapers.

Apple says Image Playground is integrated throughout its operating systems, making image creation available in a variety of apps and workflows.

The company is also introducing personalized image suggestions inspired by a user’s own photos, favourite places and activities.

Developers will gain access to the new capabilities through an updated Image Playground API, allowing third-party apps to incorporate Apple’s AI image generation features.

Apple says the revamped Image Playground represents its biggest upgrade yet to AI-powered image creation, giving users more control over generating and editing custom images across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
