Sonos Updating App With New Volume Controls and Navigation

Sonos is updating its app to include new volume controls and refine the navigation for users. The app refresh is rolling out as a beta this week for enrolled members.

In a Reddit post, CEO Tom Conrad confirms that Sonos is developing a new volume control interface. Conrad states that the new volume controls are designed to let users pick up the app and quickly fine-tune the listening experience with up and down buttons. It also includes a “new way to synchronize across a group of rooms.”

Additionally, navigation is being targeted for refinement in this beta. Sonos is adding three tabs, including Home, System and Search, to replace the hidden gestures and content cards. This feature will be native on both iOS and Android, Conrad states.

Conrad also says the beta software introduces “more control over how your players are listed and displayed.”

Sonos has been struggling with its mobile app for the better part of two years. Following a major refresh in 2024, Sonos has been playing catch-up to reintroduce basic controls, features, and quality of life improvements.

“What I wanted from this work was simple: a series of enhancements that make Sonos easier to learn and easier to use,” Conrad says. “The team has spent hundreds of hours over the past year watching real customers use the Sonos app, longtime owners and brand new ones alike.”

The latest software update is rolling out to beta testers this week. It’s explained that testers will need to go to the Settings menu and select ‘Enable Improved Navigation’ to see the changes. Once the new features roll out, all users will have to opt into using them. “From there we’ll listen to what you have to say and iterate until it’s fully polished up.”

Sonos app users can sign up for the beta program here.
