Sony Is Officially Killing PlayStation Game Discs: Here’s When
Sony is done with game discs, so get ready to pour one out. Starting January 2028, every new PlayStation game will be digital only, available either through the PlayStation Store or as a download code at retail. If you were hoping to keep buying physical copies of new releases, that window is closing.
The company said straight up that the general preference for digital has significantly outpaced physical discs, and that this is just them catching up to where their players already are.
It’s worth noting that games already out or launching before January 2028 in disc format aren’t going anywhere. This is strictly about new releases after that date, so your existing collection is fine and anything dropping in the next year and a half will still get a physical version if one’s been planned.
Sony also says it’ll keep working on giving players options for where they buy, even if the disc itself disappears. Retailers will still be part of the picture, just selling download codes instead of boxes with discs in them. The pros of having disc games were that you could always sell them later or trade them in, or take them with you to a friend’s house. The end of physical media continues here with Sony.
Sony also made a separate announcement today about major changes coming to the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita.
