Rogers Axes Vancouver Radio Stations Amid Nationwide Cuts

It’s a rough day for radio in Vancouver, with Rogers Sports & Media announcing the closure of both Sportsnet 650 and longtime station News 1130.

In a statement to iPhone in Canada, Rogers Sports & Media said, “After a thorough review of our radio stations across the country, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close Sportsnet 650 and News 1130 in Vancouver. We are grateful to our listeners and to our team for their contributions to the local community.”

Listeners in Vancouver woke up to both stations off the air as of today.

The two closures are part of a bigger shakeup, with six radio stations shutting down across four markets, according to the company. Rogers pointed to a shrinking audience and “revenue trends” as the reasons behind the move. News and sports stations also went dark today in Calgary, Halifax and Kitchener.

Even with these cuts, Rogers Sports & Media still owns and operates 44 radio stations across the country in nearly 30 communities.

As for Canucks fans wondering where to tune in, the company says Sportsnet will shift the radio production of Canucks games over to another Rogers Sports & Media station in the market, with more details on the way.
