Apple Looking Outside Samsung for its First OLED iPad Air Display

According to The Elec, Chinese display maker BOE is actively bidding to join Apple’s supply chain for a redesigned iPad Air equipped with an OLED display, attempting to secure a secondary role behind primary supplier Samsung Display (via MacRumors).

The South Korean publication notes that BOE is gearing up its manufacturing capabilities at its B12 facility in Chongqing. The site houses the firm’s sixth-generation production line, which is currently being prepared to manufacture screen samples for Apple’s evaluation.

The upcoming redesigned iPad Air, expected to debut in early 2027, will mark a significant departure from the current liquid crystal display (LCD) technology used in the mid-range tablet line. Apple plans to release the upgraded iPad Air in standard 11-inch and 13-inch sizes.

Unlike the high-end iPad Pro, which utilizes a costly tandem-stack display structure for extreme brightness, the new iPad Air will adopt a single-stack RGB design paired with a glass substrate and thin-film encapsulation. This setup allows Apple to eliminate LCD backlights for deeper blacks and better contrast while keeping production costs low. The panel is expected to run at a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Display already holds the primary contract for the new tablet panels and is on track to begin scaling up production late this year or early next year. However, Apple frequently prefers to work with multiple suppliers to minimize supply chain bottlenecks, reduce manufacturing risks, and boost its bargaining power to lower costs.

Whether BOE actually secures a contract remains an open question. Apple requires all potential display partners to pass a rigorous internal qualification process. BOE is scheduled to submit product samples for testing soon, with a final decision expected between November and December.

If BOE passes inspection, its initial order volume will likely remain modest. Sources suggest early shipments from BOE might be restricted to iPad Air units sold within the domestic Chinese market, or earmarked specifically for refurbished devices.
