If there was ever any doubt that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be one of the biggest game launches in history, its early pre-order numbers appear to be putting those concerns to rest.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick says GTA 6 has seen an “exceptional start” since pre-orders opened in June, describing the response as both “unprecedented” and “astonishing.” However, the company isn’t sharing specific sales figures just yet, as reported by Variety.
Pre-orders for Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated sequel opened on June 25, nearly five months ahead of its planned November launch. The standard edition of GTA 6 is priced at $109.99 in Canada, while an Ultimate Edition is available for $139.99. Anyone who pre-orders ahead of launch receives the Vintage Vice City Pack, which includes a ’55 Vapid Stanier sedan, Shore Court Garage, additional outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern inspired by Tommy Vercetti’s iconic tropical shirt.
Players who pre-order digitally through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store also receive one free month of GTA+.
Interestingly, Rockstar is taking a different approach to physical copies this time around. Retail versions of GTA 6 won’t include a game disc. Instead, the box contains a digital download code, meaning even those buying the game from a physical retailer will ultimately download it to their console.
Reports earlier this year suggested the decision was intended to help prevent copies from leaking ahead of release. Take-Two has since pointed to the continuing decline of physical game sales as another factor behind the decision.
Despite the enormous early demand, Zelnick isn’t declaring victory just yet. The CEO noted that Take-Two and Rockstar still need to deliver on expectations surrounding what is easily the publisher’s most important release.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
