Google Gemini App Surpasses 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced in a post on X that the Gemini app has hit one billion monthly active users, making it the fastest growing product in company history.

According to Pichai, this milestone makes Gemini the fastest growing consumer product in Google’s history, as well as the 14th individual service in the company’s portfolio to cross the one billion user threshold.

Approximately one year ago, Google reported roughly 400 million monthly active users for the assistant. That figure climbed steadily to 900 million, adding tens of millions more in recent months before finally touching the ten-figure mark. By reaching this tier, Gemini joins an elite group of core Google platforms that includes Google Search, Gmail, Android, Google Maps, Google Chrome, Google Play, and YouTube.

Fresh data released alongside Pichai’s announcement offers insight into how people interact with the platform. Usage habits show a clear pivot away from traditional typed text prompts in favour of voice and visual controls.

63% of active users now interact with Gemini directly through voice commands. Parents in particular show a strong preference for hands-free operations, proving 43% more likely than average users to rely on spoken prompts for routine tasks.

Multimodal interaction is also expanding rapidly through features like Gemini Live. One in every five Gemini Live sessions now incorporates live camera streaming or screen sharing, giving users step-by-step assistance with physical tasks, home repairs, or study diagrams. In educational settings, 38% of school-related requests include file attachments such as notes, PDFs, or photos of worksheets.

Small business owners and creators are also leaning heavily into the tool, generating over 150 million images daily for marketing and design work.
