Apple Maps Ads Go Live Across Canada and U.S.

Apple has officially started rolling out advertising inside the Apple Maps app for iPhone users in Canada and the United States, as noted by 9to5Mac. The release fulfills the tech giant’s early announcement that sponsored listings would hit the platform before the end of summer.

Two iPhones display Apple Maps: left screen shows a search for Restaurants with a nearby list; right screen shows a map with pins and a search bar overlay.

While the rollout began quietly over the past few days, Apple confirmed that access will gradually expand to reach all iPhone users in the coming weeks. The move places Apple Maps in direct competition with Google Maps, which has long relied on search advertising to generate revenue from local businesses.

Under the new system, users will notice paid promotions in two distinct areas when navigating the app. The first placement appears right when opening the app, where sponsored locations show up in the Suggested Places section before a user types anything into the search bar. The second placement occurs after running a search, where paid ads appear at the top of relevant search results.

Visually, Apple has designed the ads to look almost identical to regular business listings. Promoted entries keep the same standard layout, photos, and information cards as unpaid locations. However, Apple is distinguishing paid listings by attaching a small blue badge labeled “Ad” next to the business name.

Apple has stressed that its advertising model in Maps maintains strict data protections. According to the company, location data and ad interactions are kept separate from individual Apple Accounts. Personal information remains stored locally on the iPhone rather than being collected or stored on central servers, and data is not shared with third-party advertisers.

The launch represents a significant shift for Apple, which historically positioned its native applications as ad-free alternatives to competitors. However, as hardware growth stabilizes, the company continues looking toward services and advertising to fuel long-term financial growth.
