Just days before Apple’s big hardware reveal, tech analyst and forum developer “pdfu” has uncovered five major camera upgrades in the latest iOS 27 beta code heading to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup (via MacRumors).

The discoveries reveal that Apple is preparing a serious overhaul of its native Camera app, adding pro-level tools and hardware support designed to turn the next flagship into a mobile photography beast.

The most telling technical clue hidden in the code is support for aperture-based image correction. According to the breakdown, the updated camera software can dynamically adjust lens corrections based on different physical aperture settings. The system blends image processing across up to four reference points to eliminate optical distortion and keep photos sharp.

This software infrastructure heavily reinforces rumors that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro main camera will feature a physical variable aperture. A variable lens opening allows the camera to narrow or widen physically, giving creators natural depth-of-field control and far better light management in tricky environments.

Beyond underlying lens support, Apple is building advanced video and photo exposure tools directly into the native viewfinder. The code points to exposure scopes, allowing creators to toggle real-time histograms and waveforms on screen. Photographers will also get visual overlay tools to prevent ruined shots. For creators who prefer total manual input, the software reveals new manual focus logic. While iOS 26 experimented with a manual slider that was later pulled from early iOS 27 builds, the underlying code remains intact and locked exclusively to devices shipping with iOS 27 or later. This restriction means older hardware will not get the feature, reserving direct manual focus locking for the upcoming iPhone 18 series.

Finally, the code shows an updated self-timer mechanism. Instead of taking a single shot and pausing while saving, the new timer takes rapid back-to-back photos and resets the countdown immediately between shots, letting photographers take bursts of timed self-portraits without resetting their setup.
