Apple Reveals AirPods 5 With ANC and Optional Volume Swipe Controls

Apple has announced AirPods 5 in two open-ear models, both with active noise cancellation, with preorders opening today and availability starting September 18. Announced prices start at $129 US, matching the previous generation without ANC, while a $149 US version adds volume swipes, longer battery life and wireless charging.

A new multi-port acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ are designed to deliver richer, more detailed sound across different ear shapes. Apple says these changes also improve Personalized Spatial Audio, making listening more immersive.

Noise reduction improves by 50% over the previous generation, according to Apple, which claims industry-leading ANC for an open-ear design. Transparency mode lets surrounding voices and sounds through more naturally, while Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts between transparency and noise cancellation as background noise changes.

Connected to an iPhone, AirPods 5 provide hands-free access to Siri AI’s personal context and general knowledge. Apple demonstrated asking Siri about a restaurant a friend had mentioned, then requesting walking directions. Live Translation, introduced last fall, is also included.

Apple says the earbuds have been re-engineered for greater durability against rain, sweat and dust. The base model offers up to four hours of listening with ANC, or up to 20 hours with its charging case.

The $149 US model adds on-stem volume control, previously available on AirPods Pro, letting users swipe up or down to adjust loudness. A redesigned battery cell stores more energy within the same design, extending listening to up to five hours with ANC. Its wireless charging case supports Apple Watch and Qi chargers.

Apple says the upgraded model costs $30 US less than its predecessor. Canadian pricing is coming, so stay tuned. Hopefully it remains the same, but any changes could be due to forex rates.
