Apple has unveiled iPhone Duo, a foldable iPhone roughly the size of a passport when closed that opens to reveal the largest display Apple has put in an iPhone. This is the foldable iPhone we’ve been hearing about for so long.
Duo opens to a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display with 50% more screen area than iPhone 18 Pro Max and 80% more than iPhone 18 Pro, according to Apple. Its 5.4-inch outer display offers 90% of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.
Later this year, both screens will support Apple Pencil with USB-C for notes, sketches and document markups, bringing Apple Pencil support to iPhone for the first time.
The design features an asymmetric shape with two rounded corners and a polished Grade 5 titanium frame. Apple says it is its thinnest iPhone when open, with key components packed into the raised camera area to leave room for the battery system. It comes in Star White and Night Sky.
Both screens share the same aspect ratio to help apps transition between them. The inner display has a narrow, uniform border, while a FaceTime camera sits behind the screen, hidden when not in use.
A new hinge supports the centre of the display and holds it flat when opened. A custom variable-torque mechanism controls the opening and closing motion, while magnets keep the phone securely shut.
Internal support ribs strengthen the structure, and the antenna gaps are reinforced with ceramic fibre inserts that Apple says are three times stronger than Grade 5 titanium. Duo also has Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Touch ID is integrated into the side button for authentication whether Duo is open or closed. Users can register multiple fingers for different grips or unlock the phone with an Apple Watch. Speakers at the top and bottom provide spatial audio in portrait and landscape.
On the software side, iOS 27 moves controls to the side, leaving more vertical room for content and keeping buttons within thumb reach. The home screen dock is vertical, and a compact status bar fits into a corner.
Apps expand as users open the phone, with controls staying in consistent positions while content fills the larger screen. The inner display supports two home screen pages at once, an inbox alongside an open message, and two apps running side by side.
During the reveal, Apple criticized competing foldables for having square screens that it argued compromise vertical scrolling and surround movies with oversized black bars. The company said it started with the display experience it wanted, then developed the hardware around that goal.
The interface also responds as Duo folds, rotates or flips over, switching layouts and displays to match its position. Canadian and US pricing yet to follow…stay tuned and let’s hope your jaw doesn’t hit the floor too hard.
