Apple TV’s hit spy series Slow Horses held the world premiere for its sixth season at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Lightbox Theatre in Toronto, just days before its September 16 streaming debut.
Sir Gary Oldman, who both stars in and executive produces the show, led the red carpet event. He rejoined fellow cast members Olivia Cooke, Saskia Reeves, Christopher Chung, Rosalind Eleazar, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, and Ruth Bradley. Director Adam Randall and executive producers Douglas Urbanski, Hakan Kousetta, and Billy Bowring were also in attendance.
The drama centers on Slough House, a dreary administrative dumping ground for MI5 agents who have botched their careers through major blunders. Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the ill-mannered, unwashed, yet remarkably clever leader of these outcast spies. Instead of doing boring desk work, the team repeatedly stumbles into dangerous, high-stakes intelligence operations across London.
Season six promises to push the disgraced agents into even deeper trouble. This time around, the team finds themselves on the run after MI5 head Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, drags them into a risky scheme involving revenge and retaliation.
The upcoming season also marks a notable return for Olivia Cooke, who reprises her role as Sidonie “Sid” Baker. Joining the cast this year is BAFTA award winner Lenny Rush, who adds a fresh face to the veteran ensemble.
Apple TV has built a massive hit around the show, which continues to gain critical acclaim. The previous five seasons hold Certified Fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with two seasons earning a perfect 100 percent score. The fifth season recently pulled in nine Primetime Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series alongside individual acting nominations for Oldman and Lowden.
Streaming services often struggle to keep momentum going past three or four seasons, but Slow Horses has managed to keep its writing sharp and its audience hooked.
