PlayStation 5 owners in Canada can now watch free live TV and on-demand shows directly from their console, with Sony adding a new Live TV service that does not require a paid subscription. The service launched in the U.S. last month and now it has expanded to Canada on Tuesday, as previously promised by the company.
Live TV on PS5 appears directly under the Media tab on the PlayStation 5 home screen, so there is no separate app to download. Users select the Live TV icon, sign in with their PlayStation account and connect or create a Sony Pictures CORE account to start watching.
Sony says the service includes movies, TV shows, anime, live sports, news, weather, documentaries, podcasts and other programming. Featured channels and content shown by Sony include NHL, UFC, Crunchyroll Box Sets, Hunter x Hunter, Black Clover, Death Note, Community, Teen Wolf, The Shield, Hot Ones, MeatEater TV and Moviesphere by Lionsgate.
Both live channels and on-demand programming are available, with Sony saying more channels and content will be added over time. The service is completely free and does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription or another paid TV subscription. But of course the service is powered by ads, so you can’t get your cake and eat it too.
Sony has also made the service fairly straightforward to access. From the PS5 home screen, users open the Media tab, select Live TV on PS5 and choose “Log In With My PlayStation Account.” A Sony Pictures CORE account is required, although users can link an existing account instead of creating a new one.
Live TV on PS5 supports both the DualSense wireless controller and PlayStation Media Remote. Closed captions are also available through the video player’s Audio & Subtitles menu, with caption styling based on the PS5’s system-level accessibility settings.
Later this year, Sony says it will also bring its Live TV service to its Bravia televisions.
