Apple TV has added another action movie to its growing catalogue, this time turning Mattel’s iconic Matchbox toy cars into a globe-trotting adventure starring John Cena.

Matchbox The Movie officially premiered today, October 9, on Apple TV, bringing together a sizeable ensemble cast for an action-comedy inspired by the miniature vehicles many of us grew up collecting. Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA agent who unexpectedly returns to his hometown after years away. His reunion with childhood friends quickly spirals into an international pursuit, leaving the unlikely team responsible for preventing a global catastrophe.

Joining Cena are Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro and Teyonah Parris. The supporting cast includes Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave, whose previous work includes Netflix’s Extraction movies. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay, with Skydance Media and Mattel Films producing the project.

Apple previously showcased the movie at San Diego Comic-Con, where John Cena and several cast members were announced for Apple’s Hall H presentation. The company also held the film’s world premiere in New York City on October 5, ahead of its streaming debut.

While Matchbox is best known for its collectible toy cars, the adaptation takes a different approach from a traditional racing movie. Instead, it uses the brand as the foundation for an international action story built around friendship, espionage and plenty of automotive chaos.

Matchbox The Movie joins Apple’s expanding lineup of original action films, including The Gorge, Wolfs, Ghosted and The Family Plan.

Canadians can watch Matchbox The Movie directly on Apple TV. A subscription costs $14.99 CAD per month, with a seven-day free trial available to eligible new subscribers.
