Geely, China’s Auto Giant, Is Officially Coming to Canada

Geely is officially coming to Canada, adding another Chinese automaker to a market that just opened its doors to Chinese-made EVs.
Geely Auto Group announced Friday on X that its mainstream Geely Auto brand has started setting up Canadian operations and building a retail and service network, with its first vehicles arriving in 2027.

This is only possible because of the trade deal Prime Minister Mark Carney signed with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in January. It replaced Canada’s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made EVs with a quota of 49,000 vehicles a year at a 6.1 per cent tariff, while China eased its tariffs on Canadian canola.
The quota opened on March 1, with Global Affairs Canada handing out import permits first come, first served, and the first Chinese-made EVs landed this spring. Ottawa wants half the quota going to EVs under $35,000 by 2030, plus Chinese joint ventures building cars here.
Models, pricing and dealer locations will come closer to the commercial launch, with updates posted to Geely.ca. Get ready to open your wallet, eventually.
Bryan Wu, managing director of Geely Auto Canada, called the country “an important next step” and said the brand knows “trust is earned over time.” Geely says it wants experienced local dealer partners who know their communities.
Geely Auto Group is no small player, selling more than 3.02 million vehicles worldwide last year, including nearly 1.69 million electrified ones, and moving over 2.23 million so far in 2026. Its brands, which also include Zeekr and Lynk & Co, are sold in more than 100 countries and regions.
BYD has been the one to watch so far. The Chinese EV giant plans 20 Canadian sales locations this year and started a hiring push in Toronto in June. That same month, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly flew to China to meet BYD, Chery and Geely about investing here.
Geely joins a growing line of Chinese automakers rushing into Canada, after nearly 16,000 Chinese-made EVs entered the country under the new trade deal.
Would you consider a Geely as your next car?
